About SITA

Is a multinational information technology company specializing in providing information and communications technology services to the aviation community. SITA. was founded in February 1949 by 11 airlines (10 European companies) as a cooperative providing communications between airports and airlines. Known then as “Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques” (French for “International Company for Aviation Communications”), the company has evolved from its early days of providing only network services to today offering a range of information and communications technology services. It is owned by the air transport industry and is managed by around 400 member owners worldwide. Headquartered in Geneva, SITA employs around 4,500 people worldwide.

SITA serves more than 2,500 customers worldwide. These include airlines, airports, aerospace companies, air cargo organizations and governments. Serving the air transport industry means that SITA needs to be present in all countries where the aviation industry operates, and today SITA operates in more than 200 countries and regions. SITA provides solutions for aircraft operations, airport operations, baggage and cargo operations, commercial management, communications, infrastructure, passenger operations and transport security.

As one of the most diverse companies in the world, SITA has a strong international and local presence with offices worldwide. In all matters that have an impact on communications, data processing and transmission between companies, SITA cooperates with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and other international and national government bodies.

By meeting the communications needs of member airlines worldwide, SITA enables it to fulfil its responsibilities under the latest Annex to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. In this regard, SITA has established the Aviation Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN) which operates under the auspices of ICAO. Through its systems, the communications facilities of the world’s airlines are linked together on a common basis and under its full control.

In 2019, SITA celebrated its 70th anniversary.

As of 2021, SITA has been able to offer airlines “from A to Z” integrated solutions to reduce their fuel consumption (one of their main expenses) and therefore greenhouse gas emissions. The company collects a large amount of data that makes it possible to determine the optimal speed during takeoff, the altitude to reach during the cruise phase and when to start the landing phase. The company also analyzes wind speed, weather data and air pressure to optimize flights. Montreal, along with Singapore and Amman, hosts one of the two control centers from which SITA remotely manages airports around the world. SITA has also partially developed flight optimization solutions in Montreal facilities, which play a “key role”. It took five years to deliver a complete solution to optimize aircraft consumption. In the next step, SITA will focus on optimizing aircraft consumption during ground movements.
